Chamber member ESP Energy has started the New Year in style after just completing a £1million project for one of the most famous tourist venues in Wales.
The family-run firm specialises in renewable energy technologies and has just commissioned a Biomass heating system to provide energy for the iconic Portmeirion village, near Porthmadoc, in north Wales.
Architect Clough Williams-Ellis designed and created the Italian-style village between 1925 and 1976 and the new bespoke energy system will provide heating and hot water for 28 properties including its distinctive villas, Castell Deudraeth and the Portmeirion Hotel, with provisions to add a further 8 dwellings in the future.
Cult television series The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan, was filmed at Portmeirion village in the late 1960s.
ESP Energy design engineer George Ruxton, said: “We were delighted to win this tender for such a prestigious location and fully commissioned the system in January, both on time and to budget, having installed over 3.5 kilometres of sunken pipework around the unique setting together with building a dedicated Energy Centre to house the system itself on the edge of the village, and this will provide energy for the next two decades and beyond”
Portmeirion’s managing director, Robin Llywelyn, commented: “Portmeirion village will benefit greatly from using a more efficient system, saving money on energy, earning through the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme and lowering their carbon footprint, thereby future proofing the beautiful village for many years to come.
“In the words of architect Clough Williams-Ellis, we should ‘cherish the past, adorn the present and construct for the future’ and that is certainly what we have done with this project.”

One major advantage with the use of renewable energy is that as it is renewable it is therefore sustainable and so will never run out. Renewable energy facilities generally require less maintenance than traditional generators. Their fuel being derived from natural and available resources reduces the costs of operation. Even more importantly, renewable energy produces little or no waste products such as carbon dioxide or other chemical pollutants, so has minimal impact on the environment.
Renewable energy projects can also bring economic benefits to many regional areas, as most projects are located away from large urban centres and suburbs of the capital cities. These economic benefits may be from the increased use of local services as well as tourism.
The Need for Renewable Energy
There are many energy sources that are already extremely limited in supply and being depleted by the day. These sources include oil, natural gas, and coal and it is a worrying fact that it is just a matter of time before they will be exhausted completely. In fact estimates state that they can only meet our energy demands for another fifty to seventy years. So in an effort to find alternative forms of energy, the world has turned to renewable energy sources as the solution.
When we speak of renewable energy the typical ones we are speaking off and are trying to make mainstream consist of solar, hydro, wind, geothermal, ocean and biomass. The most common advantage of each is that they are renewable and cannot be depleted. They are a clean energy, as they don’t pollute the air, and they don’t contribute to global warming or greenhouse effects.
Since their sources are natural the cost of operations is reduced and they also require less maintenance on their plants. Of course there is a disadvantage to these in that it is difficult to produce the large quantities of electricity their counterpart the fossil fuels are able to. Since they are also new technologies, the cost of initiating them is high.
Although these disadvantages can put people off the facts are that we will eventually ‘have’ to convert to renewable energy of some sort. When you burn coal, gas or oil you rapidly convert a relatively easily available, concentrated source of energy into a useless form known as dispersed exhaust gases. These gases do nothing other than pollute the planet and of course the coal that once made them is now gone, used as an energy. By using renewable energy we are merely tapping into a natural flow of energy, sunlight, moving water, wind, biological- or geothermal processes. These are part of natural cycles of highs and lows. Their energy is truly renewable as it remains available to the same degree and is not depleted any more than it otherwise would by using it—an advantage of renewable energy that we have discussed.
Once the technology is created and refined to be as efficient as possible we no longer have to worry about the current aspects of depletion and pollution. Through research and development, as well as, new technologies, the hope is many of the disadvantages of renewable sources of energy can be eliminated and we can successfully incorporate it into our power supplies. The best form of renewable energy depends on where you live and what you need the energy for. In the UK it is generally agreed that near-shore wind farms hold the most promise and could alone generate three to four times the country’s power requirement and create 35,000 new jobs.
