Wrapped up in love: a magical winter wedding.

There is something about a winter wedding that brings a touch of fairy tale to the occasion. One of the best things about winter is that the evenings start early. This means more celebration time, and plenty of room for candles, fairy lights or even some fireworks. Summer may be brighter, but in winter you can create your own light.
The beauty of winter lies in its ability to paint a stunning picture. Winter always has a way of bringing out the beauty in its surroundings.  Think of frosty mornings, mystical days and crisp clear nights.
Choosing winter means you could pick from Christmas, New Year and even Valentine’s Day for a truly indulgent day.

And as winter weddings become more and more popular, designers are focusing harder to create stunning dresses fit for a winter bride.  Look for styles made in heavier fabric like satin or taffeta, steering clear of chiffons or silks. And if you’re wearing a strapless dress, accessorise with a fur shrug to achieve the ultimate glamorous winter look. Complete with ivory gloves and sparkling jewellery for a sprinkle of wintery lust.

It is clear to see why a winter wedding works so well, couples love the dramatic scene a winter wedding brings, but there are more reasons to choose a winter wedding.  You’ll find off-season rates and always good availability too, and with many venues offering incentives to choose them for your winter wedding wonderland, you’ll have more to spend on a lovely honeymoon designed for two.

Your wedding is the day you dream of, something personal and something perfect. In order to ensure that it runs smoothly and that you achieve this dream day, you need to plan and arrange everything early. As a couple throughout the months leading up to your wedding you’ll be looking for businesses that can provide you with the services you will require for the big day.

As a result, one of the most popular features in The Northwest Times are the ‘Weddings’ features that appear each issue. We bring to the Bride and Groom a range of high impact editorials that provide practical advice and guidance to achieving that perfect day. Blended with these editorials we feature a number of adverts from those who can provide these services and ensure a magical wedding day.

There’s no more special a day for a couple who wish to share their lives together than their wedding day. It is a day of dreams, hopes and expectations and one of love and happiness. A wedding is cherished for many years to come and celebrated as an anniversary each year.

The tradition of giving a gift on a specific anniversary is said to have dated back to the middle ages. It is thought to have originated in medieval Germany where, if a married couple lived to celebrate their 25th anniversary together, the wife was presented by her friends and neighbours with a silver wreath to congratulate them for the good fortune that had prolonged the lives of the couple for so many years.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe. Something old is said to represent the link with the bride’s family and the past.  Something new is for good fortune and success in the bride’s new life and something borrowed is to remind the bride that family and friends will be there for help when help is needed. Something blue symbolises faithfulness and loyalty, this actually dates right back to biblical times when blue represented purity, and the last part of the saying “a silver sixpence in her shoe” is to wish the bride wealth in financial terms as well as in happiness.

Most brides today marry in white which symbolises maidenhood. This tradition started by the rich in the sixteenth century. The tradition was given a boost by Queen Victoria who chose to marry in white instead of silver which was the traditional colour of Royal brides. Before the white dress brides wore their best dress. The colour was a matter of preference. The following is a traditional rhyme offering advice on dress colour:

Married in White, you have chosen right,
Married in Blue, your love will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,

Married in Brown, you will live in town,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Pink, your spirit will sink,
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.

Romance in Scotland

Scotland’s natural heritage is what makes this place so amazing. It’s a place where you can truly relax and enjoy the picturesque views. With miles upon miles of unspoilt natural beauty, it’s no wonder it’s a top destination for romantic weddings. Have your dreams come

true and choose from Lakeside hotels to fairy-tale castles, complete with roaring log fires and cosy walks. Set amongst the most beautiful and wonderful views, there’s no better place to make your fairy-tale wedding come true. And with such a vast and impressive collection of unspoilt natural beauty, it’s no surprise to hear its home to a large variety of wildlife. Stunning scenery and breath-taking views that stretch as far as the eye can see, it’s defiantly the place to be.

There are hidden gems everywhere; wild moors where the whistle blows free, towering peaks too high to reach, dramatic gorges and sheer cliffs, sandy beaches and spectacular cliffs, quiet coves to hide and reflect, rocky shores to relax and reflect.

Ensure your wedding day will be as stunning as you are by choosing to have your wedding here.

Scotland

The perfect location for the biggest day of your life!

Marrying in Scotland gives you a unique choice of ceremony unlike possibly anywhere else in the world! Scotland is truly beautiful.  There really is nowhere that can compare to the views here; breathtakingly stunning beaches, unbelievably gorgeous lochs and magically romantic castles, and of course wonderfully cosy hotels. What more good reasons are there to get married here other than there are more choices available to you for the style, content and location of your ceremony than anywhere else in the UK. Scottish law allows you to exchange your vows practically anywhere you want. The minister, priest, celebrant or clergyman carries a licence that means you can choose your venue, no matter how wild or romantic.

Beaches here are unspoilt, from Blue Flag award winning to secret gems to hidden rocky coves. And as for the lochs, they are a distinctive and dramatic component of Scotland’s landscape, renowned worldwide as part of Scotland’s cultural identity and reputed for their beauty, attracting a wide variety of wildlife. Also forming a big part to Scotland’s identity are the magnificent castles here, still standing, with many still being used today. For centuries the inhabitants of Scotland have been building fortifications and strongholds of one kind or another. It wasn’t long before magnificent castles sprung up, their gorgeous towers reaching for the heavens. It seems that anyone who could afford such protection for their families did just that as its estimated 3,000 castles were built and plenty of evidence remains to suggest that this is true.

If you have selected right by choosing to have your dream wedding in Scotland, you may wish to make it even more special by indulging in one of the many Scots traditions that have seen many couples through their happy day and lives together. Mentioned here are just two of the traditions that can be found in the different areas of Scotland’s beautiful landscapes. Financial luck is taken care of with a wedding scramble, as the bride steps into the car the father of the bride throws a handful of coins for the children to collect. And good luck is wished upon the happy couple with help from a spring of heather being hidden within the Bride’s bouquet.

Historically Scotland has always been a popular destination for those seeking a truly romantic setting in which to make their wedding vows. Scottish weddings are by no means new, but since Madonna got hitched here, half the world seems to want to come and tie the knot, a bit like Vegas, but a lot more dramatic and cool.

A Bridesmaids Job

Being asked to be a bridesmaid is a special honour and an incredibly lovely experience to remember forever. However, if you’ve never been one before, it can seem a little daunting. We have come up with a small guide to help all those lucky Bridesmaids out there. Outlined in this guide include your key roles and bridesmaids duties before, and on the day.

Today, many traditions are still much the same, with a few tweaks here and there. Bridesmaids and pageboys usually all get dressed at the bridal home or the place where the bride is getting ready. If you’re chief bridesmaid (or Maid of Honour if you’re married), your role on the day is of utmost importance to the bride and the other attendants. You must maintain a calming influence throughout the day, and be as organised as possible. On the morning of the wedding, you’ll need to ensure that you’re at the bride’s house early, ready to be on hand to everyone and anyone.

The chief bridesmaid, bridesmaids and other attendants will probably travel to the ceremony venue with the bride’s mother. Once there and all the attendants are assembled, the photographer may want to take some pictures before the bride arrives. The chief bridesmaid will have to organise the other bridesmaids and pageboys, particularly very young ones. When the bride arrives, the chief bridesmaid will need to ensure everyone is assembled and in the right position behind her, ready for her entrance. Calm any excited little flower girls and pageboys using bribery (sweets) if necessary and make any adjustments to the bride’s veil and dress.

Bridesmaids also have very specific duties. You follow the bride into the venue (or you may go first, American style) and usually sit near the front, ready for the procession back out at the end. Make sure that you know where to go and that young children have their parents seated close by. Once the bride has joined the groom, the chief bridesmaid takes her bouquet. If in a church, when the couple sign the register, the chief bridesmaid goes with them into the vestry or side room, accompanied by the best man, to witness the signing. On leaving the ceremony venue, the chief bridesmaid and the best man take their positions behind the bride and her new husband for the recessional. Other older bridesmaids will be escorted by the ushers. Younger bridesmaids and pageboys will follow behind.

Once you are all outside, the chief bridesmaid may need to arrange the couple and attendants for the photographs.

Once at the reception, the chief bridesmaid should circulate amongst the guests during the reception, ensuring that they are enjoying themselves and don’t need anything.

The first dance is exclusively reserved for the newlyweds, but it is traditional for the chief bridesmaid to take to the floor with the best man and join the happy couple midway through the first dance.

Finally, when the couple change into their going-away outfits, the chief bridesmaid should be on hand to take care of the bride’s wedding dress and ensure that it is returned to her home.

There is a lovely tradition behind the small thank-you gift the bride and groom will probably give you. The giving of extra presents to the bridesmaids is an ancient custom, handed down from the days when the groom had to catch his bride and, rather than actually chasing her, he used to bribe her friends to lure her to a place where he could stealthily approach her!

Northern Brides

Tie the knot in the north and enjoy picturesque views. Enjoy all that this side of the country has to offer with miles upon miles of unspoilt natural beauty. Many of the country’s most romantic wedding venues are here. So make your dreams come true and choose from Lakeside hotels to fairy-tale castles, complete with roaring log fires and cosy walks. Set amongst the most beautiful and wonderful views, there’s no better place to make your fairy-tale wedding come true. Be spoilt for choose with mountain views. 95% of the country’s highest mountains are here with the majority confined to the Lakes, North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. With such a vast and impressive collection of unspoilt beauty, it’s no surprise to hear its home to a large variety of wildlife. Stunning scenery and breath-taking views that stretch as far as the eye can see make for fantastic picture opportunities and on top of that you have a perfectly romantic calm to your wedding day. Have your wedding day surrounded by pure beauty made by nature with hidden gems that are everywhere here; wild moors where the whistle blows free, towering peaks too high to reach, dramatic gorges and sheer cliffs, gently rolling hills, sandy beaches, spectacular cliffs, quiet coves to hide and reflect, rocky shores to relax and reflect, sandy dunes, salt marshes and estuaries. Be assured your wedding day will be as stunning as you are by choose to have your wedding here.

Are you looking more towards the other side of the map of where to get married? Is so, North Wales might be the one for you. If the romantic Celtic charm doesn’t win you over then the 750 miles of clear stunning coastline will. There are endless gorgeous beaches that stretch from Chester to Lleyn peninsula and on to Barmouth. Not only do you have lovely seaside resorts here but also calming mountains and hills of Snowdonia too. Secret villages and old market towns can be found guarded by castle ruins and reached by stone and iron bridges. There’s a fine selection of venues and they range from great houses and even castles to classic country houses and cosy bijou hotels, there are others that may catch your eye as a little bit different but If any place is going to have you saying “I do take thee” North Wales is definitely the one it has to be.

Wedding cakes can make a big statement and impress your guests. The cake tends to be one of the main focuses of the wedding reception, so take your time selecting the right cake for you and your guests.  You need to ask yourself a few questions before going out looking for a cake. How much are you willing to spend and how big does the cake need to be to accommodate all of your wedding guests. A few things to consider, how do you want the cake to look? Think about the style and colour. If you’re looking to match the colour and theme of the wedding then think about subtle touches of colour in the decoration. Accessorize, make sure you have your sugar flowers, ribbons, cake toppers and candles in your budget, your cake will not look quite so special without one or more of these. If you’re planning on giving as a desert then the taste is very important. If the cake is simply for decoration purposes then neither the taste nor the size of the cake matters much. Fruit filling is traditional but there are plenty of other tasty fillings out there just make sure to remember your guests with allergies and most importantly don’t forget to enjoy your big day!

Congratulations! We believe that your wedding should be the very best day of your life and in order to achieve the numerous things needed to make your day come together, you need to be calm and organised. It can all seem a little daunting; rings, dresses, flowers, venue, caterers, invitations, holiday, photographer, the cake and so on but I can assure you that there will be lots of fun along the way too. There are lots to consider, think about and decide upon but just so long as you pace yourself all your hard work will pay off.

The thing with weddings are that you can go as crazy as you like when it comes to perfection and uniqueness from custom made rings to tying the knot on the peak of Mount Everest or go as simple and fuss free as you so please. When looking for the dress of your dreams make it a special day out and when searching for the perfect venue keep an open mind you may just surprise yourself.

Wedding fayres and exhibitions are a great way to see local wedding services and products at one event, giving you an insight which is invaluable to anyone planning a wedding so make sure you keep your eye out for those too.

Enjoy your wedding planning journey and good luck for your big day. For more wedding ideas and how to plan the perfect wedding don’t forget to visit www.theultimateweddingguide.co.uk
