Pastoral Care and its Importance in Schools

The need for excellent pastoral care has never been more important. Every school will claim that they have exceptional pastoral care but how can you be sure? St David’s College has always placed enormous value in focusing on the individual and supporting them to realise the potential of their gifts to give them the freedom to flourish.

What is Pastoral Care?

Pastoral Care is a school’s commitment to the well-being of every child in their care and is always best when the school puts the child at the centre of everything it does. Programmes are put in place that consider many different elements of a child’s life in the school. Physical activity, social inclusion, emotional support, and intellectual development are all key to the happiness of any child in an independent school. Happy, content children with a positive attitude approach their studies with focus and a willingness to learn.

Communication is vital

Communication between staff and pupils is key. Pupils must feel comfortable coming to staff with any concerns, likewise staff strive to get to know their pupils and make themselves available to them. Feedback from the children about their thoughts on the Pastoral Care provision is equally critical. Open dialogue between the child and Staff is vital.

Community

Genuinely exceptional pastoral care is constant, it permeates throughout the child’s educational experience. It can be in the classroom or part of extra-curricular activities. Continued support and guidance prepares children for the world after they leave the school; providing opportunities to grow, work as a team, develop resilience and leadership skills, and most importantly the will to never give up will help to carry each child throughout their life.

Pastoral Care in the Digital Age

The shift to online learning meant Pastoral Care provision had to adapt to digital platforms. Being understanding of each pupil’s situation is important, not all pupils will have access to the same level of resources they have in school so good two-way communication helps.

Taking time to do fun things helps to engage pupils by breaking up the monotony of working at a screen. Varying the school day helps pupils feel involved and part of the community.

When every child feels safe in the knowledge that they are a valued member of the community, that is where their true gifts can be found, nurtured, and given the freedom to flourish.
